I think having a rant post this week has helped. This way the actual posts I make can be positive, but I can still get the other stuff off my chest. I don't really have much news. I haven't been doing much aside from lazing about, reading and crocheting. I'm working up to my auction fics-- the two for Help The South should be rather good, I think. At least, the prompts I was given were good.

I'm still experimenting with crochet. I want to make little fandom doll key chain things. Guess who I'm working on right now. Still trying to get the proportions right, but I'm rather excited about the preliminary turn out. I got a couple of used books on crochet, and one about Yarn Bombing. (See wiki here. I think it sounds pretty neat and kind of want to take it up when I go back to DC. There's a real ninja feel to the act, and I think it could be fun.

Yarn related: according to meetup.com there's a group of people who knit and crochet near my hometown. It's a closed group, so I can't see any details and I've signed up on the site with a pseudonym (the one attached to my conceivingaplot gmail account). I'd kind of like to go to a meeting- just to get out and maybe meet new people, but I don't know if it's primarily a group of older people or what. I could send them a message and ask i a college-aged amateur crocheter would be welcome/feel comfortable, but I'm kind of on the fence about it. Thoughts?

I also got The Hobbit used (though I found out the next day my dad owns a copy). I haven't read any of Tolkiens' so I figured that was as good a place to start as any, what with the movie coming out next year. At the store, I found two books for my Irish Lit class this fall, for a good deal. On a related note, I am now officially signed up for band. One of my friends is also a flute player and joining the university band, so I'm pretty psyched.

Real quickie because I'm in Atlanta for the weekend and [livejournal.com profile] help_midwest  is up and running, in an attempt to provide aid to the storm-stricken communities in that area. You can see a before and after image of the damage here. I know there have been a  lot of auctions lately, but I'd really appreciate any effort to spread the word about this auction. I'm out of town right now, but once I get back I'll be offering some crochet critters and possibly a book or two.

Hope everyone's well.

Goes off to write other auction fics...

First thing I managed to do when I got home: spill a bottle of water while sitting in bed. Fail.
Second thing: Find the [livejournal.com profile] helpthesouth  auction. Win.

Quick post in the five minutes before my laundry finishes: I am busy busy busy. About 20 things to do on today's checklist, but assuming I achieve all of them, move out should be easy, I should ace my exams, and I'll have nothing to worry about until I get home. At least, that's how it would go in a perfect world.

Chances right now that I'll be employed this summer have jumped to about 96% I'd say. Unfortunately, the email that tripped this jump also informed me I wouldn't be able to start until June 6. In a month. A month at home, doing nothing in a town where there is nothing to do and not having a car. These are not promising prospects, but I'm trying to stay positive and come up with a plan for how to spend my time so I don't end up in my pjs all day everyday (which hypothetically sounds nice, but in practice makes me kind of ill with boredom).

In the mean time, I also wanted to pimp the Lightening round of the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan  auction. For which I am offering postcards and fic.

Hey guys,

Several hundred people have died and a lot of people are missing due to the tornado outbreak in the South on Wednesday. That's not too far from where I am and a lot of people from my school have family in that area. Does anyone know if there's an auction or other fund-raising effort going on that I can get involved with, being low on cash? Also, I'd be willing to offer drabble/fic/mail to people as incentive to buy LJ's Tornado Relief gifts.

Otherwise, your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated. Hoping everyone is safe.

I've been largely absent for the past couple of weeks and probably won't reliably return until next week. I'm going to spend some time catching up on comments and my f-list today, but in the coming week I'll be participating full time in a service project. Hopefully it will be fun.

In my absence: my parents visited, I had two job interviews, was invited to share an apartment with a friend over the summer, failed a logic test, aced two archaeology tests, offered fiction for the New Zealand Auction here -- the bidding ends for that on Sunday if anyone's interested; I've worked a bit on the "Airport" story that made an appearance in this meme, begun anonymously filling a Torchwood/Sherlock prompt on the [livejournal.com profile] shkinkmeme  here (which is going a lot faster than the previously mentioned story, in all truth), and have failed to begin writing the three archaeology papers that will be due in the next month.

I also bought bus tickets to NYC for a day trip with a few of my friends in April, and took over more serious responsibilities for Scrabble Club and am in charge of advertising for our tournament. I made cookies for my roommate's birthday and found a neat chocolate-cake-in-a-mug recipe to try out, and discovered this adorable video of baby red pandas. I went to the zoo and saw two theater productions, 12 Angry Men and Laughter on the 23rd Floor, which were fabulous, plus the film Unknown, which was not as good as it could have been.

So, um, I've been a bit busy. :D

Today is a dull day, because Alternative Breaks doesn't start until tomorrow and now that it's spring break there's approximately no one on campus, the dining hall is closed and the bus is running on a slower schedule. Not to mention the vending machine ate my money and told me I couldn't have a soda. But I finally have the time to respond to everybody's entries, so hooray! Right after I go raid another dorm's vending machine...
1. As a result of the New Zealand Earthquake an auction to help Christchurch, NZ has been created here: [livejournal.com profile] help_nz. There is currently a lightening round up and a request post. The official auction will open for offers February 28th, and for bids March 1st (though I don't know precisely why the delay. They have an awesome delicious post for sorting through the current bids and requests though, if anyone is interested in having a look.

2. I have lately become obsessed with listening to The Arctic Monkeys and playing 8 Letters in Search of a Word. While they first will have no effect on my GPA, the second is reason enough to stop bringing my laptop to class. It's rather addictive.

3. My parents are taking the MegaBus up here to visit me as we speak. For the both of them, round trip, the ride cost $4. I'm really excited to see them and we're going to go shopping and go out to eat. They're taking me and a couple of friends out to a steak house on Sunday, so I'm rather excited. Wow, that was unnecessary linkage. Apparently I'm going for the most links ever in this post.

4. A group of students from my dorm and the dorm next door went to see The Social Network at the live-in faculty's apartment last night and have free burritos and a discussion about the film. It was very interesting, but the part that stood out to me the most was that (it was implied that) everyone at Harvard read Mark Zuckerberg's livejournal. Which just struck me as kind of odd.

5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] charisstoma ! Hope your day is full of wonderful things! :D

Dear internet,

I am bored.

I've become entirely fascinated by these fundraising auctions. I already pimped [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction  earlier, as well as my offer (which three people have expressed interest in, woo!), but now I bring you [livejournal.com profile] helpbrazil2011 . Brazil is also experiencing terrible flooding and mudslides (you can read an article about it here). The auction is just getting going and it would be great to spread the word as much as possible.

(Also, I have offered fun mail here. Just so you know. :D )

Much love to you all!

Hey everyone (yes, I am alive following the most intense 50 minute class of my life though I can't properly walk anymore, or stand, or...move)!

I'm sure you're all aware by now of the horrific flooding going on in Australia right now. [livejournal.com profile] theotherdibbler mentioned the other day a wonderful multi-fandom auction going on to raise money for flood victims, [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction It's an awesome opportunity for people to help out, either by offering something or bidding on something.

Here you can find my own offering of three little crochet creatures. The bidding starts at $6, if anyone is interested. I hope you all get the chance to have a poke around and are staying safe and dry. :)

I slept until 2.30 this afternoon. This is what jet lag looks like guys. It's an exhaustive way to live.

Regardless of that, I am super happy to be home. The trip was eighteen thousand kinds of awesome, including, but not limited to: meeting up with Rae-la, riding in a double-decked tour bus, and raising over $700 for a men's homeless shelter through offering and auction alone! More on that last note: we auctioned off massages, friendship bracelets, and baked goods to the choir and chaperons to get that much money. It's more than we've ever made before and I just find the sheer thought of it mind blowingly fantastic.

In summary, the trip was good. We sang, we sight-saw, we gave to others. Also on the plane ride back I hand wrote about six pages of a story, which was quite a relief as I hadn't written anything all week. We have three more concerts tomorrow at the church, and then I'm off to orientation on Tuesday! My life right now is exhausting. But oh so wonderful!
